What is spinning?

Spinning is the process of turning loose wool into thread or yarn. For centuries, it has been the heart of textile making, connecting people with the fibres they raise and wear. From simple spindle work to the steady hum of a wheel, spinning transforms raw fleece into something useful and beautiful.

Tools

Spinners use a range of tools, from the smallest drop spindle to large treadle wheels. Each tool changes how the yarn feels and how fast it can be made. Even simple hand cards or combs can shape wool into fibre ready for the twist. Tools carry tradition, but they also invite play and personal rhythm.

Types of Wool

Every sheep breed brings its own character: soft Merino for lace, springy Corriedale for socks, strong Romney for outerwear. Exploring fibres is like meeting different voices, each with a story to tell. Spinners often mix breeds or add colour, creating yarns that are both practical and artistic.
